¿Qué es la Psicología del Deporte?

A raíz de la participación de nuestro país en los Juegos ODESUR y en el Mundial de Brasil, como es habitual, se ha hablado en los medios de comunicación sobre la necesidad de profesionalizar el deporte en Chile, aumentar la inversión en esta materia, tanto pública como privada, fomentar su práctica en los establecimientos educacionales (escuelas, universidades, etc.). Sin ir más lejos la mayoría de los atletas que participaron en los juegos Suramericanos, durante 9 horas al día tienen otro trabajo, ya que para ellos el deporte es más un hobby que una realidad; ellos entrenan en su tiempo libre, y en algunos casos ganan medallas pese a sus circunstancias (se esperaría que fuese gracias a ellas).

En este contexto, en lo que respecta a las Ciencias del Deporte, me voy a referir brevemente a la Psicología del Deporte para luego explicar con ejemplos que pueden ser conocidos por todos los seguidores del deporte nacional, cómo esta disciplina puede contribuir a mejorar nuestra calidad de vida y nuestro rendimiento deportivo, dependiendo de los objetivos de cada uno.

De acuerdo a Cox (2009), la Psicología del Deporte es una ciencia en la que se aplican los principios de la Psicología en el ámbito del deporte (Ej.: jugar fútbol) o la actividad física (Ej.: ir caminando al trabajo). Estudia el efecto de los factores psíquicos y emocionales sobre el rendimiento deportivo y el efecto de la participación en un deporte o de la práctica de actividad física sobre los factores psíquicos y emocionales.

Al ser una disciplina nueva, es poco lo que se sabe sobre ella, y mucho de lo que se comenta son mitos, voy a mencionar los más conocidos (Weinberg y Gould, 2010):

1) sólo está indicada para deportistas con problemas,

2) sólo para los deportistas de elite,

3) proporciona soluciones fáciles y rápidas y

4) no tiene ninguna utilidad.

  • En relación al primer mito, la Psicología del Deporte se emplea para promover la salud, por ende parte de las intervenciones apuntan a fomentar estilos de vida saludables en personas de cualquier edad y prevenir la aparición de patologías. De hecho, solamente un 10% de los deportistas manifiesta trastornos mentales y de conducta que requieran la atención de especialistas en Psicología Deportiva con orientación clínica.
  • Con respecto al segundo mito, la Psicología del Deporte está indicada para todo tipo de deportistas: jóvenes en proceso de desarrollo, adultos, 3era edad, personas con discapacidad física o mental, etc. Se busca mejorar el rendimiento y alcanzar un mayor desarrollo personal, el trabajo con deportistas de elite es sólo la punta del iceberg.
  • En cuanto al tercer mito, es común que considerando la velocidad con que vivimos el día a día (Ej.: vamos al cine y en paralelo estamos publicando en Facebook las impresiones de la película), se esperen soluciones rápidas e inmediatas, como tomarse una pastilla y que todos nuestros problemas desaparezcan. Pero cuando hacemos eso sólo disminuimos los síntomas, no trabajamos sobre aquello que los generó. Es por ello que la Psicología del Deporte no entrega soluciones mágicas. En ocasiones entrenadores y deportistas esperan que en 1 o 2 sesiones van a aprender a mantener la concentración o la calma en situaciones estresantes (Ej.: 1 tiro libre en básquetbol, 1 penal en fútbol, sacar con 1 match point en contra en tenis, etc.). Contrario a estos mitos, para el aprendizaje de habilidades psicológicas se requiere tiempo y práctica (Ej.: del mismo modo que aprender a leer, a resolver ecuaciones o en el desarrollo muscular). Este entrenamiento no funciona de la noche a la mañana, tampoco convierte a un deportista promedio en un atleta de elite. Sin embargo, posibilita a quienes se esfuercen alcanzar su potencial y mejorar sus habilidades.
  • Por último, en relación al 4º mito, hay quienes consideran que esta disciplina carece de utilidad. Estos prejuicios se han reforzado con declaraciones de deportistas como Goran Ivanisevic, campeón de Wimbledon, quién declaró que “te acuestas en un diván, te sacan el dinero y te vas a tu casa más loco de lo que llegaste”. Marcelo Ríos por su parte señaló que: “los Psicólogos son para los locos”. Por el contrario, la evidencia de investigaciones con entrenadores y deportistas señalan que las habilidades psicológicas mejoran el rendimiento. Para llegar a esto, se debe trabajar de un modo sistemático e individualizado, integrarse al entrenamiento diario del deportista, aplicando diversas herramientas psicológicas.

Uno de los desafíos de la Psicología del Deporte contemporánea, en el alto rendimiento, es que los psicólogos formen parte de los cuerpos técnicos de manera permanente. Ello contribuiría sin duda al trabajo multidisciplinar. Si pensamos en la participación chilena en el mundial de Brasil, fue positiva en muchos sentidos. Impresiona la meticulosidad, el profesionalismo y el compromiso del cuerpo técnico de Jorge Sampaoli y de los jugadores (Vidal y Medel jugaron lesionados). Sin embargo, creo que hubo momentos en que contar con apoyo psicológico habría beneficiado el trabajo del equipo. Por ejemplo en el partido de 8vos contra Brasil, cuando ciertos comentaristas televisivos hablaban anacrónicamente de la “lotería de los penales”, creo que la diferencia pudo haber estado en el trabajo psicológico que si realizó Brasil. Junto a ello tenían una estrategia clara, Julio César apostaba por que algún jugador chileno patearía al medio, suave y a media altura, y justamente Pinilla y Sánchez hicieron eso. A su vez los ejecutantes brasileños contaban con que Bravo se lanzaría antes, consecuentemente 3 de 5 lo esperaron y tiraron. A partir de ello la presión para los restantes lanzadores chilenos subió, frente a lo cual Aránguiz y Jara optaron por lanzamientos más arriesgados, acertando sólo el primero de ellos. Me gustaría volver sobre la idea de la “lotería de los penales”, recordando dos definiciones, una del Mundial de Alemania 2006 entre el local y Argentina (en 4ºs de final) y otra del Mundial de Brasil 2014 entre los transandinos y Holanda (en semifinales). En el 1er caso, Jens Lehmann, el arquero alemán tenía un papel con las estadísticas de los penales tirados previamente por los jugadores argentinos, de ese modo podía saber con elevadas probabilidades dónde iba a lanzar cada uno. De hecho se tiró correctamente para los 4 penales, atajando 2, ¡impresionante! Pasarían 2 copas del mundo, y a Argentina le tocaría nuevamente una definición por penales, en este caso contra los tulipanes en semifinales de Brasil 2014. Sergio Romero, el arquero argentino tenía muy bien escondido un papel con las estadísticas de los penales previos tirados por los jugadores holandeses. Se tiró correctamente en 2 de 4 lanzamientos, atajando justamente 2, Argentina pasó a la final y aprendieron la lección del 2006. En este caso podemos ver un ejemplo de la ciencia aplicada al deporte, no de suerte como suelen señalar ciertos periodistas. La intervención no pasa sólo por entregarle estadísticas al portero, sino con empoderarlo y fortalecer su confianza previa a una situación de alto estrés. Imagínese como enfrentaron Lehmann y Romero respectivamente las tandas de penales, al ver el trabajo de su cuerpo técnico y al darse cuenta que efectivamente eran capaces de predecir la dirección de los lanzamientos de sus rivales con elevada precisión. Se podría hacer el mismo trabajo con los lanzadores (quizás ya se hace), entregarles estadísticas de los arqueros, que sepan si esperan al lanzador, si se tiran antes y de ser así, a que lado, lo que le hubiese sido muy útil a los chilenos contra Brasil.

Se estima que anualmente millones de niños practican sistemáticamente algún deporte, sin embargo sólo el 1% de ellos llegará al alto rendimiento. Por el contrario, muchos atletas amateur continuarán ligados a alguna actividad físico deportiva, ya sea en la escuela, universidad o en el equipo de los jubilados. De este modo, la cantidad de deportistas que practican deporte amateur, es exponencialmente mayor que el de aquellos que se dedican profesionalmente a ello. Es por esta razón que el foco de la Psicología del Deporte en el alto rendimiento es solamente la punta del iceberg, a muchos Psicólogos del Deporte nos interesa trabajar con las personas que practican deporte recreativo, ya sea en la infancia, adolescencia, adultez y 3ª edad. Nuestras intervenciones son críticas con los niños, puesto que esta etapa es crucial para que ellos sigan practicando alguna actividad físico deportiva durante el resto de su vida. Para este fin es fundamental desarrollar en ellos lo que podría entenderse como una motivación “de buena calidad”, es decir que sea auto determinada, que practiquen deporte porque les gusta, porque lo disfrutan (no por complacer a los padres) y que se relacione con elementos que los deportistas controlen. A partir de ello, es más probable que se produzca adherencia a la práctica de actividad físico deportiva. También es importante desarrollar en los atletas autonomía, es decir no decirles todo lo que deben hacer, si bien en ciertas etapas en necesario, pero gradualmente se les puede enseñar a tomar sus propias decisiones. Por ejemplo darles a elegir entre hacer un ejercicio solos o con un compañero, dar las vueltas a la cancha al inicio o al final del entrenamiento, practicar servicio o voleas, velocidad o resistencia, etc.

Por otro lado, sería lógico que alguien se preguntara ¿y por qué se espera que los niños sigan practicando actividad físico deportiva en su vida adulta e incluso durante la 3ª edad? La evidencia sobre sus beneficios es abrumadora. Realizar sistemáticamente (al menos 3 veces por semana) alguna actividad físico deportiva implica mejoras en la salud física (regula el peso, previene la aparición de osteoporosis, cáncer de pecho, diabetes, enfermedades cardiovasculares, hipertensión, obesidad, etc.), psicológica (aumenta el autoestima, reduce los niveles de estrés, previene la depresión y aumenta el bienestar subjetivo de la persona) y social (crear redes de personas con intereses similares, dejar de fumar y beber alcohol, aprender a trabajar en equipo, etc.).

Finalmente creo relevante mencionar que todos tenemos la capacidad de aplicar lo aprendido a otras áreas, es decir si adquirimos la disciplina como hábito al estudiar, ello lo podemos luego utilizar en el contexto laboral. En ese sentido, la actividad físico deportiva proporciona un escenario ideal para adquirir hábitos saludables (alimentarse y dormir bien, no entrenar más de lo saludable, luchar contra la adversidad, etc.) y valores positivos (respetar al rival, no engañar al árbitro, etc.) a través del juego, los que luego pueden ser trasferidos a otros dominios de la vida. Sin embargo se debe tener claro, que tanto los valores positivos como los hábitos saludables no son inherentes a la actividad físico deportiva, por ende el hecho que éstos se adquieran como el que los atletas se adhieran a esta práctica, depende de la dirección que reciban en sus etapas formativas, donde el rol de entrenadores, dirigentes, árbitros, padres, profesores y psicólogos es fundamental.
